Some favorite candidates to strengthen their position in Collalbo

The second ISU event for junior skaters this season, ISU Junior World Cup competition, was arranged in Collalbo, Italy, last week end. The North American skaters were missing from the participant lists, like in the first ISU Junior World Cup competition this season.

This time on Saturday, both ladies and men skated 1000 m and 3000 m and Team Sprint. On Sunday 500 m, 1500 m and mass start belonged to the event program.

Kachanova, Bosiek, Talsma and Kahanbai to renew their place on the list of favorites on Saturday

On 1000 meters’ race in men, on the podium there were three skaters that we hadn’t recognized before in this article series, as Yanan Jin from China won (1.12,18), Thijs Govers from the Netherlands was second (1.12,30) and Seonghyeon Park from Korea third (1.12,66). The winner from Minsk, Koki Kubo, didn’t skate in Collalbo. Other medalist from Minsk: were 6th (Tao Yang) and 8th (Odin By Farstad).

In ladies, Daria Kachanova from Russia won again (1.18,63), while Jutta Leerdam from the Netherlands became second (1.18,66) and Nan Sun from China was third (1.20,08). Leerdam is a new name on the list of favorites and wasn’t present in Minsk.

On 3000 m, the top 2 skaters were the same as in Minsk, but changed their standings: this time Dutch Marwin Talsma won (3:55,68) and Chinese Alemasi Kahanbai was second 3:56,01. Third was Korean Jaewong Chung (3:56,59) who was placed 5th in Minsk.

In ladies, there were known names among the top three skaters on 3000 m. Sanne In t’Hof from the Netherlands won (4.19,53), Mei Han from China was second (4.20,02) and Karolina Bosiek from Poland was third (4.22,93). Silver medalist from Minsk, Yuna Yoshimura, didn’t skate in Collalbo and bronze medalist from Minsk, Viola Feichtner, was 4th in Collalbo.

New names appeared on Sunday

On the shortest distance, 500 m, Tao Yang from China ruled again (35,82) but the other skaters on the podium were new. Xuefeng Sun from China took the silver medal (36,01) and Samuli Suomalainen from Finland the bronze medal (36,24). Silver medalist from Minsk (Bjorn Magnussen) didn’t start in Collalbo and bronze medalist from Minsk (Ruslan Zaharov) was 5th in Collalbo.

In ladies, Daria Kachanova ruled again (38,39). The silver medalist Da Som Hwang from Korea (39,59) didn’t participate in the World Cup event in Minsk. Nan Sun from China was third (39,79) (and second in Minsk).

On 1500 m in men, the top 3 skaters were Hyun Minh Oh from Korea (1.50,40), Alemasi Kahanbai (1.50,83) and Jaewon Chung (1.51,91) (8th in Minsk). The silver medalist from Minsk, Allan Dahl Johansson, didn’t skate in Collalbo.

In ladies, Jutta Leerdam won (2.01,77), Mei Han was second (2.03,03) and Sanne In t’Hof (2.03, 57).

Only Mei Han has been earlier recognized as a favorite candidate on 1500 m in this article series.

New top skaters on mass start

In mass start, the top 3 skaters in Collalbo, both in ladies and men, weren’t included on the list of favorites based on the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships 2016. In the ladies Elisa Dul (the Netherlarnds) won, Miryeong Jeon (Korea) was second and Sanne In t’Hof third. In men the order of the best skaters was: Hae Young Lee (Korea), Hyun Minh Oh and Bart Hoolwerf (the Netherlands).

The ISU Junior World Cup final will be held one week before the World Junior Championships. The event will take place in Erfurt, Germany, on 11th-12th February.

    Allan Dahl Johansson was injured during the 1000-meter. Hit his head hard on the ice and was sent straight to the hospital. Medium concussion. Magnussen was injured during warm up two minutes before his start time on the 500. He is out for a long time 🙁
