Steps towards championships in Helsinki

ISU events for junior skaters will kick-off on November 26-27th in Minsk, Belarus, where the first ISU Junior World Cup event of the season is arranged. There will be 3 World Junior World Cup events altogether before ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships in Helsinki.

The second ISU Junior World Cup will be held in Collalbo, Italy, on January 21st -22nd. The ISU Junior World Cup Final will be held in Erfurt, Germany, just a week before the World Championships, on February 11-12th.

World Cup events will help to evaluate potential favorites for the World Junior Championships. This season there are no regional Junior World Cup events in North America and Asia, thus it is yet to be seen if skaters from these regions will travel to Europe for the Junior World Cup events. Usually the Junior World Cup final gathers most of the same participants that will compete in the World Junior Championships. Skaters must, however, hold Junior World Cup points in order to qualify for the final.

– Junior World Cup events are great events for junior skaters to compare their own result level with other top international skaters. They let you find skaters you can benchmark your own performance with, comments the Coach of the Finnish Junior National Team, Jason Andberg. Finland will have a team of 8 skaters to take part in the first ISU Juniors World Cup event in Minsk.

Of course some of the junior skaters might compete in the events for senior level skaters, so an eye should be kept on those events too.

We will be following the top junior skaters before the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships. Stay tuned.
