Are there Challengers for the Eastern Might?

Allround winner in the World Junior Speed skating Championships 2016, Benjamin Donnelly, also ruled in the 1000 m and 5000 m distances, while Min-Seok Kim won 1500 m. On 1000 m, Kim became second. Marten Liiv from Estonia was third. As Liiv will no longer be in the junior level next season, the top competitors for Kim on 1000 m are Tingyu Gao from China (11th on 1000 m) and Ki Woong Park from Korea (12th on 1000 m). On 1500 m Donnelly took the silver medal and Marcel Bosker took the bronze medal, who will longer be in the junior level the coming season. Thus, the ones to watch to challenge Kim come also from Korea: Hyun-Min Oh (5th on 1500 m) and Kee-Woong Park (7th on 1500 m).

On 5000 m, it was Kim again who took the silver. The bronze was won by Dutch Chris Huizinga. He will continue in the junior level the coming season. Other top competitors for Kim are the Korean Oh (5th on 5000 m), Chinese Alemasi Kahanbai (6th on 5000 m) and Norwegian Allan Dahl Johansson (7th on 5000 m).

The shortest distance, 500 m, was led by different skaters. The top three skaters were Ignat Golovatsyuk from Belarus, Christopher Fiola from Canada and Tao Yang from China. From the medalists, Yang is the only one who continues in the junior level the coming season. Top competitors for Yang are Niek Deelstra from the Netherlands (5th on 500 m) and Odin By Farstad from Norway (12th on 500 m).

In the mass start, the winner in men was Min-Seok Kim from Korea. Christopher Fiola was second and Benjamin Donnelly third. Kim is the only one from the medalists that will continue in the junior level next season. His top competitors are Samuli Suomalainen, skating on his home ice, (4th in mass start), Austin Kleba from USA (5th in mass start) and Chris Huizinga from the Netherlands (7th in mass start).
